Mice breed year-round, producing up to 10 litters of 12 pups per year. That’s a lot of mice! Given their reproductive ability, mice are a problem to many homeowners. They breed quickly enough that it can feel nearly impossible to keep up with them. The key to getting rid of mice is to trap them inside the house, then target them strategically, using the right traps in the right places. Getting rid of mice takes persistence and patience. If you need help, do not hesitate to give Mouse Control a call. We provide effective solutions to all mouse problems.
Mice are omnivorous mammals that feed mostly on seeds, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and grains. They have big ears, pointed snouts, long tails, and slender bodies that measure up to 10cm long. Mice, like most other mammals, like to nest in warm locations where they can feel safe. Wall voids, floor voids, unused drawers, the spaces under cabinets and refrigerator motor compartments are popular nesting sites. Here, they will breed as long as they have food and shelter. Mice reach sexual maturity at 6 weeks of age and have a gestation period of 20 days. With an average litter size of 6 pups, a small mouse problem can very quickly get out of control.
How to Get Rid of Mice
Because mice multiply so rapidly, it’s important that you use lots of traps. Choose between snap traps, electronic traps, and live traps, then set them in rooms where the mice are active. Some traps can catch multiple mice at once. Wearing a pair of disposable gloves, bait the traps with a pea-sized amount of peanut butter, candy, or jerky, then set them against walls or in the backs of cabinets. Check your traps every day. If you have to handle dead mice, spray them with disinfectant first, then throw them out in sealed plastic bags. Disinfect the traps before re-using them.
Keep the house as clean as you can. Tidy up, get rid of the things you don’t need, and move things off the floor. Then, deep clean the kitchen and pantry. Put food in airtight containers and avoid leaving any dirty dishes out overnight. If you have pets, put their food away at night. Mice love pet food and may even stash it behind the walls, where you can’t clean it up. Then, when you are done deep cleaning, seal up every possible entry point. Put weatherstripping on the bottoms of your doors, fix broken screens, and cover vents with steel mesh. Use caulking or epoxy for small cracks in the walls.
